To all those opposed to health care reform and affordable health care..what should we do?

what should we do with working families that do not make enough to afford good preventative health care and dental care? which as we know is even more important than emergency care...for it is good preventative care that reduces major health problems.

So the question is ....ok..you are opposed to health care reform, but what would we do with senior citizens who cant afford to pay for all the medicines that they are taking, or a family of six, whose employers do not offer health insurance and the family has to go buy health insurance at $500 per month on a salary of $40,000 per year? or any other endless examples that say clearly that health care and health insurance costs are out of control...I am speaking not of bums who are not working, but working americans who are in a crisis. Plus the bums as you call them..what should happen to them? no health care at all? just let them die off in some street corner?

Affordable good preventative health care is a human right.

WE should have a sliding scale similar to this: Any family earning less than $150,000 per year qualifies for a tax credit for any insurance premiums they have to personally pay for, all the way down to families making at least $70,000 per year. Families making less than $70,000 per year get a smaller tax break, but also get a discount of up to 50% of the cost of their insurance. So they would have to go out and get their insurance and the insurance company can bill the fed government for the part the customer did not pay. Families or households making less than $25,000 per year, get free healthcare if they can provide proof of citizenship.
Reply:It IS affordable - - - health insurance is a few hundred per month, and dental insurance is a fraction of that (yes, I noticed you threw in dental there - - is vision next? How about a pedicure while we're at it?). Of the 45 million "Americans without health insurance" 20 million are illegal immigrants. That leaves 25 million - - - which out of a population of 305 million is hardly a "crisis."

And please "families who make minimum wage" - - - - about 1.5% of the workforce makes minimum wage and 70% of them get at least a 30% raise within the first six months. It's an entry-level wage - - - immigrants, teens, housewives and elderly people working 3 hour shifts at the local grocery store just to have an excuse to get out of the house make up more than 2/3 of minimum wage earners. Throw in ex-cons and you're up to 3/4.
Reply:How about the families who make minimum wage--rent and food and water comes before health insurance. If they don't need it, they're going to spend the money on something else they need. 200 a month is not affordable for families living in those conditions.
Reply:Give me a hundred bucks and I'll tell you. That's basically what your asking everybody else to do....hand over money to complete strangers because they "can't afford it." No problem..I can't afford it either. Just send me some money directly from you checking account and then we'll talk. But until then, you're just another hypocrite in Democratic clothing expecting everybody else to give these people a handout.

Stop having sex and making kids when you can barely afford one.

Maybe have some low level government sponsored health care that is availble to low income folks, but have it in no way on par (coverage wise) with private insurance companies. If I pay more for my insurance (assuming I'm healthy and am not paying extravagant premiums already), I want better service/support.
Reply:Let's look at these working people who say they cannot afford health care. How many of them have two new cars, a nice large home, TV/DVD/VCR in every room, multiple computers, Internet access, Cell phones, Eat out more than 4 nights a week or take out more than once? Most people can afford Health Insurance, they just choose not to. So your over dramatization that they will die on a street corner is just ridiculous and wrong.

Reply:I doubt anyone is opposed to affordable health care, however socializing the health care system is not an option, it would ruin the quality of health care in our country. Tax incentives are certainly an option, among various other things, increasing private competition with smaller clinics for miniscule problems, instead of paying to see a doctor.

Don't forget about tort reform. That would help.
Reply:Bogus medical malpractice suits are the primary cause of the high cost of medicine. It takes the form of astronomical malpractice insurance premiums and massive legal staff required to defend and pre-empt these suits. Let's fix it!
Reply:It's a matter of priorities for us. I'm 56 and married and we are self-insured. That's important to us so we don't have a new car, don't eat out as often as we would like, don't travel as much as we want because our insurance is $700 per month and that's a great big chunk out of our monthly living expenses.

Guess what everyone pays for health care. If you have an employer then health care is part of you benefits package. You are paying for it instead of receiving the money.

For reform maybe the allowable increase should be capped. Or maybe once you have a policy then it is yours to keep.

If your employer does not offer health insurance the get a new employer. You may have to make 6 grand less a year but you get your insurance.

Your description is more about greed. The employee wants as much cash as possible. None of this cash is put towards a policy so why must taxpayers spring for this?

I actually checked to see how much it would cost to keep my coverage between jobs...$560 per month! Doesn't sound too bad in 2007 but when one is earning a whopping $150 per week take home...this leaves about $40 for the monthly rent, car note and food. That was the last time I checked on "The Snake".

So I stay away from bungee jumping, skiing, and motorcycles.

And I take care of myself...eat correctly...mostly and if I get in a serious car wreck..."no oble engles" and I have amnesia for the other words!
Reply:Working families can try to get high deductible catastrophic health plans. This will protect them from financial ruin should cancer or something else happen. Most hospitals and doctors will allow you to make monthly payments as long as they get the bulk of their money from the insurance company. These same families drive expensive cars, have designer clothes and etc so why not be responsible with that money?

Senior citizens could afford more prescriptions if pharmaceutical companies were as interested in helping people as they are in making profits. Prescription markups can be as much as 4000 percent. Also, all the TV advertisement costs are being pasted on to consumers.

Universal Health Care will simply cost more in the long run. Taxes will be ridiculous and the government being involved in my medical decisions is quite frankly....terrifying! To have to wait 3-6 months for a CAT scan is a scary thought.

Sure, adequate health care is a problem, but allowing the government control over who gets what when is just begging for even more problems.

Quit polishing it up with bleeding heart stories. You're standing there with your hand out wanting folks like me to not only pay my taxes and pay for my families insurance (Currently it's over $1,400 a month), but to pay for yours as well so that you can have FREE health care. So, to answer your question, you need to recognize that we are not immortal. That the cost of medical care today is the result of extraordinary and complex medicines and equipment that cost vast sums of money to manufacture and use. What you want is an 'affordable Rolls Royce'. People are no different today than they were a hundred years ago. We have the same diseases. Basic care and basic dentistry is not that expensive. Pay for it yourself and deal with it. But stay the heck out of my pocket you greedy, irresponsible, leech!
Reply:How will they pay for it? France has a 20% income tax and the UK's is 15%. If we use your number of $40,000 then you would be paying $667 in taxes a month for it. That is $167 dollars more than the $500 they pay with insurance.

Everyone wants something for nothing and everyone has good intentions on how to spend other peoples money. In the end though there is never something for nothing. If the government takes it over they will have to pay for it. If they pay what the insurance companies pay, it will cost more the Defense Departments budget each year.
Reply:I'm not at all apposed to heath care reform and affordable health care at all. I truly believe there must be a way to go about providing health care for everyone without breaking the bank! I'd like to see a system in place that is NOT operated by our federal government, a government that is not trustworthy when it comes to running things, in particular situations of this magnitude.
Reply:First off, to reduce the cost of health care in this country, remove liberal judges who make outrageous awards to "victims". Insurance companies are overburdened with these extreme punitive damage awards and thus have to charge more for their insurance.

As for those families who do not make enough to afford health care, find better jobs or take more jobs. Don't blame education or lack of training. If a person wants to better themselves, there is ample opportunity to do so. Heck the government can pay for most of it anyway. Further, if you can't afford the kids, don't have them until you can.

Finally, preventive healthcare? Give me a break!!!! You can't do that yourself? You can't brush your teeth daily? You can't push away from the table? You can't bring a healthy lunch instead of going to McDonald's? You can't walk around the block once or twice? Give me a Break!

As for each of your examples, there are clear, well thought out actions that would eliminate those "problems". First a family of 6, offer vasectomies and such to prevent kids being born to people who can't and/or won't be able to afford them. The elderly, what the heck is medicare, medicaid, and social security? The bums you speak of want to be so. Where are their families?

Don't present your sob stories because there are answers for each and every one of them.

Some people have to make sacrifices for health care, but it is affordable. Going without a vacation in the alps or a flat screen TV for medication is not a health care crisis. If I got sick tomorrow I would sell my car, move someplace cheaper and streamline my life. Nobody wants to sacrifice, they want to maintain their life style on the government's dime. And, they want somebody else to pay more taxes to do it.

Should we all be held responsible for an unwed mother who has had six kids with four men? That's a curable ill.

Should we all be held responsible for the sexually promiscuous who, surprise surprise, get aids? Aids is curable, just keep it in your pajamas.

Should we all be held responsible for chain smokers?

Should we all be held responsible for people who never go for a check up, a breast exam or a colonoscopy. Most cancers are curable with early detection.

It would be more affordable if everyone was required to be covered.

The biggest obstacle to the current system is people who just walk into the emergency room, get treated and refuse the coverage counseling the hospital is required to give them. If they're not cured they get an ambulance chaser to sue a system they never paid in to.

As far as the bums go....the ones who are not insane, have made a conscious decision not to participate. Most of them are in major cities that have mobile programs funded by taxes and private organizations that bring the care to them and they still refuse it.

You can't force it on people. What would you do?

Reply:im not opposed to health care reform... i'm opposed to universal health care... there would be just as many people die off waiting for treatment as there would be in the current system.. or wait 5 months to be seen. look, i'm one of those people you speak of... i definitely do not make 40k, and the insurance my company offers is expensive, so i do not partake.. but, i'd rather be able to pay a private practice and be taken care of if need be than to have my goverment (essentially the taxpayer) pay for a healthcare system that has proven to not be effective. there's a reason people from Canada and the like, come to the US for treatment and pay for it themselves... we need to do something about stupid malpractice lawsuits first of all... many do not realize that the insurance for malpractice is in the MILLIONS. and in turn, they pass that expense on to the patients they serve. this would drastically help. we live in an age of sue happy people, and liberal judges who find that there's always someone to blame for someone's misfortunes. the second problem, and the worst, is the pharmaceutical companies and their outrageous profits. i'm all for people making money, that's capitalism, but not at the expense of people's health.... so, universal healthcare is not the answer... that's borderline socialism. not to mention people wanna complain about government spending... and then we wanna tack another HUGE program on the fiscal calendar. something else that could help... let's try a flat tax system. get rid of SS tax and Federal Taxes. that should free up money for low-income families to afford what they need and it also will essentially and eventually make prices on products and services go down.

Reply:First, if you have a family of six on an annual income of 40K you must be pretty stupid. You should not have a jillion kids if you can't afford to support them. On 40K you could probably manage one kid so you would be a family of 3.

The first step in controlling health care costs is to control lawyers and their frivolous lawsuits. Next control juries who award outlandish sums of money to punish doctors who make honest mistakes. Punitive awards should be capped. Monetary awards should compensate victims for their loss and their pain and suffering. Lawyers should get no more than 10% of that. Incompetent doctors should lose their licence to practice. That's a start.
Reply:I would suggest that you have a certain income, then there are necessary expenses and health care should be one of those, and then there are the fun things, the non-necessary things. You have to live within a budget, everyone does, and that means you may not go out to dinner or movies, or go to sporting events or parties with your buds because you have to pay you necessary expenses first. To do otherwise simply means you are irresponsible and you intend on others paying them for you, which of course is WRONG.

Should there be the opportunity in the US to allow illegal immigrants into our armed forces to become legal?

While I believe most illegal immigrants are working hard and doing their job in America, I'm wondering if anti-immigration folks would think it's alright to have illegals serve in the military, and after their service become legal citizens? You can't deny the need for soldiers, and the white yuppies wont be sending their college students to war, so why not send unemployed illegal immigrants? This is also a great way of keeping tabs of illegals and their families (through the military) and shows that if they are serious about coming to this country, they are willing to serve it. Not to mention, by joining the military these illegals can have the medical, dental all the stuff for their families. It seems like the best of both worlds to me - allowing the U.S.'s diversity to grow, having more people serve the country for good personal reasons, and possibly even creating a larger mass of patriotic Americans of foreign descent.

Actually there is a law that allows foreigners to serve in the military to gain thier citizenship..................... it happens all of the time. I know about 10 men who have done this personally. (I'm in the Navy.)

The problem is, this oportunity is out there and no one wants to take it. Most of the illegals in America have no desire to become citizens. They don't want to bear the true faith and allegiance to this country that is required to be in our military. (I also grew up in Texas and learned of this first hand as a child.)

There are ways to come to this country legally........ and get paid to do it. And anyone who has a natural desire to become part of and honestly contribute to this society needs only ask for it to become available to them.

Reply:I have dual nationality and lived in the UK for a couple of years recently. I had an NHS dentist during that time. Now that I'm back in Australia, I've had to have most of the work he did redone - very poor quality. I don't trust NHS dentists.

How would they go about buying land and building a home there? (Or is that wholly unrealistic?) Are they permitted to own/operate cars? Can they receive routine health/dental care? Receive treatment in hospitals when necessary? Are there jobs for non-Chinese speaking Americans in China?

Foreigners and locals now receive much more equal treatment. All land in China is currently owned by the government by default so what you're actually buying is a leasehold. In the past there have been problems with the authorities moving people out of their property because they want the land for something else. But these problems were there before and now new legislation has been introduced to protect residents' and investors' rights since Feb. 2004.It is safer to own property in China than ever before. New legislation protects the rights of private owners and investors. China is desperately keen to maintain the phenomenal growth that it has experienced over the last few years. This growth is largely domestic but also thanks to the huge inflow of 'foreign direct investment'. The authorities know that if they do not look after investors' interests, a large part of which is respect of personal property rights, then the flow of FDI will dry up and economic growth will be damaged. They have every incentive to look after foreign investors as looking after your interests is very much in their interest.

The other risks associated with owning property in China are no different to the risks associated with owning property anywhere: loss of tenants, unruly tenants, unforeseen maintenance requirements, etc. The best way to deal with these problems before they happen is to buy the right property, appoint the right managing/letting agent and find the right tenants.

Reply:nrgounder is right. It is safer for foreigners to own land in China than ever before. Which doesn't make it terribly safe. I personally will keep my investments in countries somewhat less prone to nationalization of private property.

But then you know they are socialists when you invest there. It is sort of a worldwide warning label on investments in China. That does not stop companies from investing, they just require a greater return for the risk.

I hear there are millions of working americans and their families that have no health insurance..due to employers not offering it.....which sounds like a very bad situation. But I also often hear that everyone in this country has access to free health care if they need it. WOW, get ready for a can of worms.

No, everyone does not have access to free health care if they need it. There are Emergency Rooms for health emergencies if you don't have health insurance. They have to treat you for life threatening emergencies by law. If you go to the ER with strep throat because you don't have any insurance, they might hem and haw but they'll still treat you. If you have a chronic condition, they'll do the least possible for you to get you out of the ER. Hospitals have clinics based on a sliding scale for those who don't have insurance, you often have to wait a long time for appointments. The doctors in the clinic are often overworked, or newly trained. Again, people with chronic conditions do not get the best treatment possible, and frequently, even if they work hard or worked hard all their lives, are treated like dirt because they dont' have insurance. Quality care is not available for those who do not have insurance. Preventive care is non existant, the working poor often to not have enough money to spare for preventive care.

The elderly have medicare which gets cut further year after year, leaving many people to have to choose between buying medication or groceries. If the elderly don't eat well, they are prone to strokes or heart attacks. Often they have to live with other relatives to make ends meet.

I feel that the problem is the insurance and pharmaceutical companies lobbyists. They have far too much power. People say they don't want the gov't in our health care, well, it already is because of the power we have allowed them to have. We also have third party insurance which is through our employers...why do we need that? Why can't we get affordable health insurance on our own, like car insurance? Employer insurance came about during WW2 to attract workers to the unions. It's an outdated way of handling insurance, we need to look at that as well.

A really good book on this subject is "Uninsured in American-Life and Death in the Land of Opportunity" by Susan Starr Stared that really covers this problem in depth and shows that it's not a problem of the poor but crosses many cultures and classes. Great question, a star for you!

Some states like Illinois offers some help for the uninsured. I live in Ohio. We basically have nothing for someone in my position. I am a 26 y/o male, I have a full time job, but my company is small and does not offer health insurance and I cannot afford my own policy.

At one time, I had a personal health insurance policy through SummaCare, a local hospital/health insurance provider. It cost me about $96 dollars per month. That's a little more than what I would cost an employer on a group plan. To make a long story short, individual plans suck. The insurance company knows that I am not backed by any government regulations because I'm not on a group plan, so they gave a crap about me. They would constantly deny my doctors visits knowing I couldn't do anything except pay the bill...

..which brings me to my next point. My doctor was nothing more than a disguised con-artist. He knew every way to bilk money from my insurance company. He knew what tests they probably would and wouldn't cover, and took every test he knew he would get paid on. Well, he didn't know I wasn't on a group plan. Every test I was given was denied, and an hour at the doctors office turned into a $659 bill in my mailbox. I had to fight and fight with them to pay it. It took 7 months, and they paid $580 and I still had to pay the rest. I canceled the policy thereafter.

When I stepped back to look at everything, I saw a money hungry machine whose primary focus wasn't to help people..it was to make money.. a lot of it.

Reply:The decline in health care availability can be traced to the Medicare program. The more involved that the Federal and State governments have gotten in health care, the bigger the problem has gotten.

Since the 1960's, the constant tinkering with health care and health insurance by the government has increased the cost drastically for everyone.

If you understand that Medicare only pays about 50% of what doctors and hospitals charge, you begin to see that not only has that forced the health care providers to DOUBLE their prices in order to get paid what they need, but it has doubled the cost for those who are covered by insurance too. In addition, when Medicare pays half and big groups pay 75% of what the hospital charges, that has to be made up elsewhere. That has driven the cost for health insurance through the roof.

The number one problem is that at the same time you have a large number of people without coverage, you have the government forcing increased benefits down the throat of employers. That raises the cost even more and causes more employers to cut back or eliminate health insurance.

We are getting the cart ahead of the horse in thinking that getting everyone covered will solved the problem. The truth is that unless we get the cost of health care under control, we will not have any chance of increasing the number who are insured.

There are plenty of bad guys behind this problem. It starts with out of control government who lets big medicine and big insurance do what they want and pass the problem on employers. We are very near a complete collapse of our current system as many employers are close to the max of what they can pay to cover employees. Of course that has not happened in industries (or schools or governement) where those costs are just passed on in the form of higher taxes. The cost of health care is what is preventing our schools from having enough to operate....the lions' share of tax dollars to to teacher health care and retirement programs.
Reply:Alright, I work in a hospital in the US so I hope I can answer your question.

The problem isn't a lack of access, there are plenty of doctors and other providers, the problem is cost. So although by law anyone can go to an emergency room and get treatment for their problems, the ER will charge you an outrageous amount for the care provided. A recent visit for strep throat was over 500 USD and no tests were run and no meds given, this was just to look and do a 30 second exam.

The hospitals know that the majority of patients will not pay this, the ones who pay out of pocket are a rarity. The people with insurance will only pay a small portion of the charge and their insurance company will dictate to the hospital how much they will pay.

I know you don't wan't to hear this but yes lawyers are largely to blame for this. insurance rates have skyrocketed over the last 15 years resulting in not only much higher direct medical costs but more unneccesary tests (all very costly) ordered by physicians in order to cover their own liabilities.

Also, it is important to remember that health insurance is simply a way of sharing the cost of medical treaatment among many people, the majority of whom do not use as much as they pay for. Insurance companies are in the business of making money! If they have to pay for frivolous tests, proceedures and lawsuits, they will simply raise the rates of all their subscribers to make up the difference. Have no fear, the insurance companies will not loss out in this situation. I have seen patients cost their insurance companies upwards of a million dollars (the average 25 week preemie baby who has a better than 50/50 chance at survival for instance). How many of these can we, as a society, support?

In a slighty long winded nutshell, that is the problem with health care in the US today.
Reply:1. When a business is "FOR PROFIT", PROFIT is what they are interested in, not cures, not affordable healthcare, not the welfare of their customers. As long as the Healthcare Industry is profit-motivated, having a sick customer base is in their best interest. Therefore, our Healthcare System can NOT be in the business of curing illness or repairing broken organs and limbs. This is why the LAST disease cured in the world was Polio, over 40 years ago. There's no profit in cures.

2. Any employer with more than 12 (or 20 in some states) employees MUST offer some form of Healthcare plan to its employees. The CATCH is, it can be a plan which would cost the employee so much to participate (one such plan I personally saw would cost 115% of the employees' post-tax salary, to cover himself, his wife and 1 child, all nonsmokers and in fine health), no one WILL participate, and the employer still gets to say he has one available. This is why the kids this next 2 or 3 generations coming will have no option than to either go into buisness for themselves, or work for some huge corporation, with so many employees they can offer reasonable co-payments and higher benefits with lower premiums. Or, Nationalize the damn industry and make US anti Monopoly Laws MEAN something again. And of course hospitals and clinics and such are running monopolies. They are the hospital you HAVE to go to; go ahead and switch doctors and you gamble on whether your insurance carrier will honor payments for treatment from them. If they don't it's not THEIR problem, it's YOURS and the hospital or whatever will contact YOU, not the insurance co. for payment.

3. Many other countries have realized many of these trends BEFORE they became facts of life in their countries and this is why their nationalized, NON-PROFIT Health systems cost their GNP about 4 to 7%, (depending on country), while Healthcare costs in the US take up almost 14%, and both Health Insurance Companies and Drug Companies are posting huge profits each quarter, while millions of American citizens have no hope at all of ever finding an employer who can offer a reasonably priced healthcare plan, AS LONG AS THE US HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY IS FOR PROFIT. And just because a family can't afford employer-subsidized health insurance doesn't mean they can just walk into a hospital and demand treatment. First, the hospital ER WILL secure a promise of payment from you, whether you have insurance or not. And there are NO discounts for paying cash anymore either. They don't care, they're GOING to get their money. If you have a mailing address they will assault you DAILY with demands of payment, your credit will suffer for non-payment, etc. If you have a family and a residence, they will NOT consider you indigent and unable to pay.

The fact of the matter is, Australia has the best healthcare system in the world followed by Germany then Canada. The US medical industry points to countries like Australia and say patients are lined up to get MRIs.

Big deal. People have been cure of illnesses long before expensive hi-tech testing like MRIs.

Just taking the profit and unusually high admin cost out of the US health insurance industry would drop insurance cost by over 40%. That's insurance cost, not medical cost. There is no reason in the world why the health insurance business in the USA must be a for profit industry. The medical industry can operate just dandy as a for profit industry with a non profit insurance industry.

Making the health insurance industry not-for-profit would have no effect on health care availabilty. As a matter of fact, a single payer system would cut down hospital's and Doctor's adminstrative cost, which would lower healthcare cost even further.

The insurance industry keeps throwing out the term socialized medicine. That term does not apply to a single payer healthcare system. It is not socialized medicine when the aim is insurance coverage only. Single payer systems do not put doctors on a federal payroll. Single payer systems do not make hospitals federal institutes. Reply:Australia used the private sector to reform its public healthcare system. Almost 50% of Australians have private health insurance. Though the wait times are a little greater for surgery in Australia as compared with the United States, it's still much better than most other countries with universal healthcare. The big danger, of course, is that pure universal health coverage means that the government will have more control over its people. That's a major roadblock for people living in a free society.

People got to talking after the movie, and I about dropped when one gal I was with said that the only way we as a nation could stop this is if we all drop our ins coverage. Reply:I saw the clip on Canada's system, and this isn't a documentary, it is a comedy. The average wait time in my local emergency (large city) is now over 8 hours. I haven't been able to find a primary care doctor for over 10 years. Yes we pay lower for 'brand name' drugs, but we have to wait longer for the extremely cheap generics....oh and drugs aren't covered by government health....neither are ambulance rides. Traveling between provinces, there is a problem there too as government health care is PROVINCIAL not FEDERAL. Oh, and because of that, inmates in federal jail fall outside of the system and are given preferential treatment.....yup that's right, a convicted mass murderer gets treatment before you, even if you've been waiting for 2 years in the waiting list. Particularly Dental Insurance. I am 20,a Part-time worker who also goes to college full time. I am not covered by my parents nor have I ever had insurance. I am one of the many Americans who do not recieve proper health care due to low income however I do need to get Dental Insurance, and Health Insurance. Reply:Pookie, have you considered personal responsibility for your own health? Preventive care is as important if not more so than medical/dental care after something goes wrong. I have been where you are right now, so I have an idea of your dilemma. There should be a plan that the school can get for you, have you asked them? Most schools do, so try there first. If not, ask the local Health Department to see if they can assist you. While you are searching for such aid, do look into self responsibility for your medical needs. Prevention helps keep money in your pocket, and out of the doctor's. Holistic medicine might be worth looking into as well.

If I seem some what unconcerned for those without medical insurance, to a point, I am. I can remember a time when such medical care as so many long for now, did not exist.

I am so tired of hearing myself and my fellow Americans being called lazy.Tired of hearing that Americans won't do the dirty work in this country.Tired of the illegal supporters using this excuse for their cause. I think it's time we put them in their place. Lets tell them what kind of dirty work we do! If you feel comfy sharing your personal stuff, lets tell them who flips the bill for our medical and dental expenses. As for me.....until recently this native/irish girl stocked shelves at a grocery store owned by Chaldeans, (a hard, dirty, back breaking job) min. wage, no benefits. Currently I work the front desk at a hotel for min. wage, no benefits, walk to work, pay all my own medical/dental bills, get no food stamps/welfare/medicare. I live just north of the border in Cal./ have resigned this job/ more than half the housekeeping staff at this hotel are illegals. Soon I'll be unemployed, beat out by illegals again. I'll go pick lettuce if the illegals would get out of the fields.

What do you do to support yourself and your family?
As a kid I worked in chicken houses (picking up eggs in baskets of flats, picking up dead chickens, grading the eggs), worked in the hay fields, helped in our gardens, cared for the animals,hunted like a man with my Dad and brothers. Later after I finished High School I worked on a sewing machine (making jeans, blouses, baby clothes, shirts, upholstery)for $1.25/hr min. wage, that was all that was available at the time,(telling my age) secretary in a Mobile Home sales center, cleaned houses and offices for about 6 months in between jobs, nursing assistant in a nursing home, secretary in the Civil Department of Magistrates Court, sales associate at Rich's, shipping department in manufacturing, got my CDL (w/haz-mat) drove an 18 wheeler for about a year, then got a truck driving job that was local (no overnight)had to load and unload my own truck, car parts mfg.(intermediate steering sub-assemblies and super chargers). Then I went back to school and got my associates degree and moved into Quality Assurance. Then my job was outsourced(to Brazil) and I got laid off, permanently. I now work for half what I was making when I got laid off. When I first started in manufacturing car parts: they started me off at $11/hr in 1980, the same job now starts off at $8/hr. That's 26 years and the wages went DOWN!! That lowering of wages is a direct result of illegal immigrants being hired into manufacturing. I still grow some vegetables even though I no longer live on our family farm. I have a small yard but it still accomodates a few tomato plants, some bell peppers, pole beans and squash. My brother raises some chickens(domestic) and I buy from him, I still mow my own lawn, clean my own toilets, do my own housework, cooking, repairs, even some of my own car maintenence. I was raised to do for myself, not to rely solely on commercial services. If I had to do everything on my own, I know I could survive, and I certainly wouldn't go running to another country looking for a handout.

We grow collards here and I pick that, not lettuce.

Reply:Right now, I work at a hospital filing loose paperwork. in the past ten years I've been a live in nanny, flipped burgers, worked as a cashier at a gas station that about two years ago got bought out by some middle easterners who fired everyone who worked ther and replaced them all with family, and spent three years doing garden maintenance until the owner closed shop and moved out of state. Just about all of these jobs have been taken over by illegals because it's cheaper to hire them than someone who actually was raised here.

Reply:I still work for the same company, but the job I used to do, along with around 150 of my co-workers, was outsourced to Costa Rica. I still never know if I am going to walk in the door and find out that they decided to move everything there.

I used to wait tables and only made $2.01 an hour, plus tips, but I was taxed on 8% of whatever the total sales of the tickets that I wrote up that day, even on take-out orders which no one ever tips on and no benefits whatsover.

My ex is a plumber and literally has had to work up to his elbows in excrement before, work 7 days a week and be on call 24 hrs a day...he even had to work Christmas Day and evening on year and started out digging ditches for what was minimum wage at the time...$4.75 an hour.

My biggest issue with illegals are not paying taxes like we do, for goodness sake it seems like 1/3 of my check is gone before I ever see it, and getting benefits that the working poor (like yourself) are not entitled to.

Reply:My husband and I run the family farm here in Northern Iowa that is now a century farm (same family for over a 100 yrs.) My husband has served as Cheif of police, held factory jobs, I too have worked in a Hotel as a housekeeper, clerked at the local grocery. We have done just about any and everything in the past to keep this farm running. Aside from all that we still mow our own 3 acre yard, maintain a lg garden, wash our own dishes, all those "jobs" that everyone is saying we Americans won't do!

For several years I worked two jobs, fast food, and went to high school. After high school I worked at a motel front desk all night so I could go to college during the day, both work and school full time. I AM LAZY! Ear-piercing rockets fly over our heads while mothers were crying and their children dieing in the cold wintry rain that flooded up to our knees. My dad carried me on his back all the way to Iran from Northern Iraq trying to hide away from the destruction of Saddam’s regime that were set out to destroy the Kurdish people. My life has never been ordinary; I have always been in the middle of the worst. When I was about four years old in 1991 we had to flea the country in the cold winter because Saddam attacked the Kurdish region of Iraq with bombs and chemical gases that killed thousands of Kurdish people. After a year we were able to return to Northern Iraq and my dad got a job with the Europeans and Americans and worked as an engineer to bring relief to the villages by re-building water pipe lines and schools that were destroyed by Saddam’s regime. Life was hard after that but my family was one of the lucky ones that were able to get back on our feet again.

Then in 1996 the feared moments were real again when all those who were working with the Europeans and Americans to bring relief to the Kurds were warned that death was near. My dad being one of them, once again our lives were turned upside down. In a rush my family and I had to leave all our relatives and everything we had that my dad had built for us as a family. We left the country along with about a thousand other Kurds. I was just a kid when all this was happening and I didn’t really understand why all this was happening. Now remember the last time I saw my grandmother tearing as I told her, “I will see you later” and understand her fear of losing her family. This day was the beginning of the rest of our lives and not knowing what was in store for us.

For months we had no place to go, my siblings and I couldn’t go to school and all we had was a change of clothes and the money we had when we left and no clue where we would end up next. Finally the Clinton administration approved our paperwork for our situation and took us to Guam where we called home for several months but uncertain what would happen next or when it would happen once again. The time came when we were finally getting out and we were being taken to the United States. March 1997 we got to DC and our journey to survive in the US began. Going from apartments to apartments, my siblings and I were still not able to go to school. I had missed half of third grade and half of fourth grade.

I used to love school and I was usually first in my classes and advanced in some of them, but when I started school here I had no idea of the language because I wasn’t exposed to it yet. In my country children start learning English and Arabic in the fourth grade. And because of the language differences I was struggling in school simply because I couldn’t understand what was being said or read. Life was already hard for my parents trying to make ends meet and trying to feed six kids and give us a good home. I remember waking up to the sound of my mom sobbing at night since we all slept in a one-bedroom apartment. And when our education wasn’t going well it was even harder on my parents. My dad knew English and I remember he would try to help my sister and me with our homework while he worked two jobs.

Slowly things were looking up for us, my dad got a better job that paid better then the two jobs combined after going to school himself and taking some classes, and we finally settled in a town home that we still live in today. In the mean time I was doing better in school. And in eighth grade we had career day and my classmates and I got to go see different jobs. In the end one occupation that stood out the most for me was when I visited a dental office, ever since then I have wanted to become a dentist. June 2005 I graduated high school from Lake Braddock High School. My family was very proud, my dad believes education is everything and he knew he couldn’t afford to send us to a good college because of our family’s financial situation, he sent me any my older sister to the community college and thought some education is better than no education.

Now I am studying at a community college and trying to keep my dream of becoming a dentist alive. I am graduating with an associate in science summer of 2007 and in hopes of turning that into bachelors in Biology and going to dental school with it. I feel that I have accomplished a lot by at least getting my associates and this has motivated me to reach even further to get to my goal. I have taken the first step to make my dream of becoming a dentist a reality by going back to the dental office I visited when I was in eighth grade after so many years and now I work for them as a dental assistant. I started working at the dental office and not just any other place for the experience, for the future, for the college money, and also to help my family out financially to help pay the bills. I believe I have what it takes to make it and make my dreams come true. And I am sick of running and ready to fight for what I want which is becoming a Dentist and for once be proud and live an ordinary life.

That is why I would be grateful when I finish my bachelors and start dental school. I have been through a lot and I cant just give up after what I have been through. I am sure the roads ahead of me cannot be tougher than the roads I have already passed. With facing the toughest roads of life I believe I have the responsibility to continue my education in a highly educated institution.

I am an American and we all know how awful the health care situation is in America. I am not thinking about moving to the UK (at least not yet :) but I recently was talking with a friend about healthcare in other countries and I became curious.

Tell me about healthcare in the Uk. Are dental services free as well as medical services (I know you pay for them via taxes and no I am not trying to be sarcastic or mean).

Let's say someone is born in the UK but has lived in the US for a couple of years. She goes back to the UK to visit family and falls ill there. Is she still entitled to hospital/doctor's care for free or not?

I have heard horror stories about people dying on the waiting list for surgery. What if it is an emergency?

Healthcare UK Style?
I work in the NHS (National Health Service) and think that it is brilliant. Most who work in the NHS do not understand why the US has the insane system of healthcare (or rather lack of it) that it has.

Yes, you pay less in taxation, but because of insurance and medical costs themselves (including prescription costs), we pay less overall.

But the system is not perfect. People can have problems getting access to a GP (you would call a GP a family physician), and yes, there are waiting lists. The waits are not as long as they used to be before the current political party took over though.

Also, like in the USA, you can go private. There are private GP's and hospitals. You still have to pay tax and national insurance, which means that you are always entitled to NHS healthcare.

Our prescription charges are maximum about $4.00 per item, and normally, this will be for a months supply of medication. Diabetics and certain other specified medical conditions get all drugs free. In Wales, you do not even pay the $4.00 and Scotland are to follow suit.

As for emergency care, you get it. Yes there is a wait for routine conditions, but for example if you have crescendo angina, you will get seen very quickly, if not on the same day. If you have an acute condition that needs same day treatment, you get it.

As I said, it is not perfect, but it is better than what the USA has. Look at the figures in the link below for our infant mortality rates and life expectancy which are better than that of the USA. In fact, almost every western country has better figures than the USA, many have better figures than us.

Health care provision is dependent on several things. There is another link below. We do not provide healthcare free of charge for all people from abroad.

And you have to pay for dental care. NHS dental care is subsidised and the treatment options are not as varied as private dentistry, but if you want good dental care in the UK, join denplan.
Reply:I lived there for 5 years and thought the health care was really substandard. The wait to get an appointment was bad enough (several weeks) but once you get there you still have to wait for hours in a grungy crowded waiting room. I usually saw a doctor for 5 minutes after this wait (talking to him at his desk) and was sent on my way with a prescription. I had my first child there in London and my other here. There was a huge difference. I'm glad my son and I were never seriously ill when we were there, I just wouldn't trust the underpaid medical staff to take care of us in the overcrowded and under-financed hospitals. Hypothetically, I think that anyone living there would be taken care of medically if they were ill, but the quality of care is scary. I think the dental is provided too - but not sure. Taxes are so much higher there, we're better off paying for health care as we need it.
Reply:you don`t have to wait weeks to see a GP if its not an emergency you might wait a coule of days if you have somthing seriously wrong they see you the same day or you can call a doctor out to you home or go to A%26amp;E if your taken to hospital for an emergency of course they don`t put you on a waiting list ,how can they .

things can go wrong and sometimes people die .but that can happen with private care aswell

people who have money can get health insurance and go private if they want ,but at least every one is covered even visitors to the country if they fell ill while they where here .

Im african- american and my bf is white. Friday tonight while out at dinner i spilt my water and he got so mad at me that when we got to the car he slamed me into it and started yelling that i was an embaresment to him and his kind. He latter apolgized so i thought okay its fine. Yesterday he told me if i didnt clean his apartment he was going to sell me back to my country and i was liek Jim wtf are you talking about and than he shoved my head in the toilet. I finally figured this out. Santa Claus is actually an employee of the American government paid to make and buy toys to distribute to little kids on Christmas Eve as a goodwill gesture.

Trying Again - Anyone with a rabbit with a dewlap and drooling in it's sleep?

I have a giant American Chinchilla rabbit. She has no abcesses, her teeth appear fine, but when she wakes up from a nap (she sprawls out on her side), sometimes her dewlap has residue on it...kind of like drooling in its sleep. Is it possible that a rabbit gets so relaxed in its sleep that it actually can drool like a person? I've noticed this occasionally. It doesn't happen all the time, but I posted the question the other day and noone answered. Is there anyone out there tonight who can answer this for me? Do I need to have another vet check her out for dental problems. We live in a small town and don't have a huge selection of vets from which to choose. For her I would travel if it is cause for concern.

The only thing I can think of is her teeth. I would get her vet checked just to be sure they aren't too long or one is bothering her. If not, maybe she's just a drooler?
Reply:I had a rabbit as well, who just recently passed away. I know a lot about rabbits, and infact I have never heard of one drooling. I dont believe it would be a problem. Is she in a warm area?? becuase often when rabbits get overheated or just plain hot, they raise their ears and drool. Maybe she gets over heated in her sleep. What I could suggest would try to make her where she sleeps cool with a fan, or if she doesnt like the wind a mini air conditioner.

Hey everybody! I am an American and I want to see what it takes for one of my relatives that lives in Iran to come and study at Arizona State University. She is an undergrad for dental health and she has an amazing transcript. I was wondering what the steps were (other than applying to the school), to get a student visa to the U.S. She will be living with me, so I guess I am a sort of financial support for her. If you can tell me what steps we should be taking and how much it will cost all together I would appreciate it. Please give sources as I want accurate information. Thank you.

Studying in the USA?
Everything basically flows from the school application. Until she applies to a school and is accepted, nothing else can be done. Once she is accepted, the school enters her into the SEVIS database and has sent her an I-20 student form, then she can apply for a visa, but not until then. Since we don't have an embassy in Teheran, she'd have to apply in Dubai or Ankara, assuming she's in Iran. Check out usembassies.state.gov for the various embassy websites and how to schedule an interview. The view interview costs $100. Your other expenses would depend on the tuition, airfare. etc, plus factor in the flight to Dubai and hotel fare, etc. In addition to the interview, she'd need to go through a clearance process that could potentially delay issuance. Student visas for Iranian citizens are only good for a maximum of 1 entry 3 months. This means if she left the US during her studies, she would have to apply for a new visa to return, which could complicate any trip.
Reply:The school she applies to will have an office or at least a person who deals with international students and will assist her with the student visa application process etc.- she can get the info from the school. She will also have to take the TOEFL.

aww, Guam my true home. i am "chamorro" (the locals there) the hospitality is great... i recommend going there, but personally, if school is in mind i wouldnt go. yes, it is U.S territory but schools arent as good as here, in the states. umm dental hygienists? ..dude, they have dentist %26amp; doctors, relax its not a FOREIGN country. yes they speak english as the main but you'll hear a lot of chamorro %26amp;*tagalog [fillipino] the housing? it depends on which village you choose to live in... if you can afford it live in Barragada Heights ["the million dollar homes"] =)) things to do? a lot of people just chill with friends, go to FIESTAS, or if old enuff hit tumon for the party night life.. If by American Businesses you mean places like Wal-Mart or Circuit City etc, yeah there are a few though most are outlet sized. No circuit city or wal-mart that I know of but theres a K-Mart there that will satisfy you. I think a home depot too.

There are also a lot of other more international companies around, though like I mentioned more of an outpost than a headquarters. Of course you will find a McDonalds within a 10 minute drive of anywhere....

As for stuff to do; there is a tremendous variety. Larger stuff like sports (Rugby for example) are easier to find, but most exist on a smaller scale as the island isn't too large, and they tend to take a little digging to find (like R.C. helicopters). Weather will be an issue; you won't find snowboarding on Guam. In the future maybe who knows? They had a "winter wonderland" thing here a while back. A place to go for snow or something like that (it wasn't something I was terribly interested in - so details are iffy).

other random stuff you might want to consider:

If you're leaving Florida in hopes of avoiding hurricanes, then you'd be making a huge mistake.

You will gain weight while staying there.

Be aware that Guam is not the continental U.S., you will be the minority there.

The atmosphere there is generally relaxed - e.g. folks will stop to let you through 3ish lanes of traffic during rush hour. Not all of them will, mind you, but generally they will. And another e.g. Weed, although illegal, is not hard to come by.

Hello,

I live in Canada. My child is moving to US with the mother (who has custody). She is not american, she has a job offer for less than $1500/month and they give her a work permit.

In Canada the baby has health care (gov.), extended and dental health care (from my job), free education, his own house/room and extras, I put more than $500/month in tuition funds for his university and more. I don't need a cent from the mother.

In the US the baby wont have any of these, so they become "extraordinary expenses" and the mother can't afford them, so she's asking me to pay 83% of them. They're much more expensive there and in US$.

Plus, she has extra expenses like daycare (US$800/month).

So, now these numbers are above 60% of my salary and I can't live with only 40%. Plus, I can't save for my child's university anymore.

Is there a limit in cases like this for extraordinary expenses? considering that is only her decision to go to US.

Here are a few cons:

They fill jobs at minimum wage. Many people think this is good for the economy. Although it may be good for the price of fast-food or the price of lettuce, these illegals are the reason the minimum wage is still $5. How is this good for hard working citizens?

They drain our tax dollars; section 8 housing, welfare, food stamps, free medical care (especially free childbirth at American hospitals). Now think of the enormous cost of their 5 children.. public schools, free lunch programs, their medical. In fact children of illegals automatically qualify for free dental care until age 18 because their family of 7 is headed by a dude that only earns 5 bucks an hour.

Illegal Mexicans? What are the pros?
I was going to respond with the shortsightedness of your question and point out who federal entitlement programs have created a class of people who choose not t work. Capitalism requires a minimum of 5% unemployment to function. With an unemployment rate of 4.7% nationally and entitlements keeping anouther 2% at home that creates instability and SOME illegal aliens are providing a service by taking those jobs nobody else wants. Plus many illegals have legitimate jobs, such as McDonalds where they pay payroll taxes but don't get any benefits since they don't qualify for unemployment or social security. Plus they keep the economy afloat by purchasing items and paying sales tax on them, they are not exempt from sales tax.

But then I saw you raised the lettuce issue... almost all produce is picked by legal migrant farmwaorkers, not illegals.

Then considering illegals don't qualify for section 8, food stamps, or free medical care (except emergency room visits and child birth) unless your state has programs designed to cover those issues, I realized you were just making things up to "prove" your case.

But the ultimate was when you said "and their 5 children" and "their family of 7"... that sunk your whole argument since you just proved yourself to be a prejudiced hater who is casting false generalizations.

So besides being racist, you are wrong on almost every single thing you said. The cost of public schools and emergency rooms are more than offset by the tax benefits and stimulation to the economy MOST illegals serve. For me to insinuate every illegal is contributing more than they take would be as wrong as the nonsense you spouted. In the type of work I do I deal with ID theft on a daily basis, and the truth of the matter is only about 10% of the ID theft I deal with is committed by a legal US Citizen, the rest is committed by undocumented aliens, and not the ones from outer-space.That is EXACTLY how they get section 8, medical, free school lunches and food stamps, by way of ID theft. When and if they get caught they are under another name and long gone.

As an icon of American business, I feel I must ask this.

Recently, our business development division presented a briefing about future opportunities. Among them were the possibility of establishing a dentristry division, with offices in the UK, linked to their government socialist medicine ministries.

At first, this seemed like a great opportunity, since most Brits have awful dental hygiene.

However, the focus group nixed the project, reporting the results of a series of surveys that give unrefutable evidence that Brits simply don't want dentists, and are quite happy with the average appearance of their mouths, which most of the rest of the world finds repugnant. Brits call it "comely" and think it attractive.

A pity...there could have been good money there.

Reason Why Ilm asking is because, Dental Employers will see my resume and talk to me on the phone and when they meet me and see that I am African American AKA Black they either have me sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes and tell me to come back another time, or interview me and tell me they'll call me and never call what should I do. I'm always neatly dressed, very professional, Is it really this hard to get a job in LA when your black?

LA is considered pretty diverse. I wouldn't put race on the resume. As an employer myself, I hire the best talent regardless of race or gender. If I noticed that all the best candidates were men, I'd have no problem being the only woman in my own team.

Same philosophy exists in New York businesses. This will definitely matter if you were trying to land a job in government or education, in which being black may come to your advantage. In that case, putting your race down might actually help you.

I was born in Canada. I have Family on both sides of the boarder. I have served in the U.S Army for 3 years two overseas tours. Now I am back in Canada. I have been here for about a month now and am wondering if Canada has become the 51st state. All the same food restaurants all the same big box stores. Things are more expensive. The "free health care" is not complete you still need dental, prescription and vision through paid coverage. Taxes up the butt. If you by a loaf of bread its 2 bucks for the bread and 30 cents in taxes. Also you have a gov policy that is the worst kind of liberal wacko stuff ever witnessed. The gov feels they have to protect you from yourself. I have been living in the states for the last 7 years I have a Texan wife. My friends I think I’m American now. Not to mention pop culture. Canadians follow U.S icons but in truth these people are living in a foreign country. Opinions please. Should I move back before I get arrested for hate speech :)

Attempts have been made, in the past, to identify extinct flying squirrel species' via dentition characteristics, but it was found that using this method alone was inaccurate more often than not. A high degree of expertise is required to make distinctions between extinct tree and flying squirrel teeth, so skeletal (including the skull) AND dental characteristics combined present the most accurate method of identification.

So, there being a paucity of information to be gleaned from fossil records (these records are virtually all Pleistocene Era records, by the way), we have little data to enlighten us about the flying squirrel's time here on this continent.

What we do know, however, is:

What we now call the southern flying squirrel likely emigrated to North America via the Bering Land Bridge via Asia roughly 25 million years ago during the early Miocene era. This squirrel was adapted for life in temperate mixed deciduous-coniferous forests, and migrated north and south with the glacier activity through the eons.

More adapted to warmer climes than the northern, southern flying squirrels found themselves migrating as far south as Central America during the Pleistocene era, roughly 100,000 years ago. Relict populations exist to this day in higher-elevation areas of Central America and Mexico, their connectivity forever lost due to climate changes and more recently, large-scale deforestation.

What we now call the northern flying squirrel is a relative newcomer to North America, having emigrated to North America during another incarnation of the Bering Land Bridge roughly 12 million years ago, during the early Pliocene era. This route of emigration via the Bering Land Bridge is not unusual, as many of North America's mammals, both extinct and extant, followed a similar route. In fact, it is generally accepted that our First Nations people emigrated to this continent via the Bering Land Bridge roughly 12,000 years ago, although there is some evidence that there may have been "ancient mariners" who rafted across the Pacific Ocean

The general thinking today is that the northern flying squirrels came from different stock than that of the southern flying squirrel. The most convincing argument for this theory is the squirrel's baculum, a small supporting bone of the penis that aids in the mating process and is present in many mammal species. The northern flying squirrel's baculum is structurally much more comparable in shape possessed by the Asian genus Hylopetes than that of the southern flying squirrel's. The Bering Land Bridge (Beringia)

The Bering Sea, Bering Strait and Beringia (a term to describe an area ranging from the Kolyma River in the Russian far east to the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories of Canada) was named for Vitus Bering, a Danish explorer for a Russian czar in the 18th Century.

At some points, this land mass, which at times sported a rich mixed forest environment, was thousands of miles wide, depending upon sea levels in the Bering Sea.

Flying squirrels, like most of our mammals, had to pack their bags and head south to warmer, more suitable areas such as the taiga biomes shown below. Once a warming trend began to melt these huge masses of ice from south to north, wildlife also moved northward.

i am an american who came to mexico looking for work , i found a great job , they even made me a true citizen . They treat me great with benefits such as medical dental and unemployment if i were to lose my job.i even recieved a couple of grants for absolutely nothing. free money!! Why do canidates promise healthcare?

The president I'd vote for would be the first one who says keep our health care the same in every aspect as screwed up as it may seem, but provide nearly cost free Dental and Eye care system. Hubby and I have being married almost 2yrs have 1yr old baby. Dated 1yr before married. We are on the same page on almost everything except one thing MONEY. Well I make 95000 yr he makes 50000 yr. He has a child from previous marriage who doesn’t live with us, who hardly see ‘cause her mom won’t let us long story short he will not take his ex to course for the seek of their kid. Off course we pay child support almost 1200 a mo pluse medical dental etc. She is turning 16 next yr and he wants to buy her a car which I’m all for it but I don’t want him buying her brand new car she wants this PMW and I said no to my husband she could get a used American car that we could offer to pay it cash ‘cause we both have car payment I drive PMW and he has Licn. A PMW car must be the newest car on the block.

I can't imagine buying an expensive PMW car for a 16 y/o. Young drivers do not have a good reputation on driving cars especially now with cellphone and texting going on. Texting should be banned for drivers period. Cellphone use should be banned for drivers under 21.

She receives a free Apt., utilities, food, medical, dental etc. from welfare but needs a car and insurance and college education for her son. Also cell phone and cable TV are needed. Do you think taxes should be raised on homeowners so this mom can receive what she needs? She wants to stay in the USA and become a citizen.

If everything fails he can join the military, get an education, health insurance, and dental for "free" (he'll have to fulfill his service obligation to the U.S., but it is a give and take). A car is also not necessary, there is public transportation and if that fails single moms are born with a set of feet such like any other person.

I am in favor of helping people who are without a job and temporarily (that's the key word) depend on welfare. If that means taxes have to be raised so be it. I'd like to know that should I lose my job there is a safety net that will help me back on my feet.

Promoted as "it will make products cheaper" and "create new jobs as the automated processes will need people to be skilled to maintain and program the machines" (made elsewhere). Tell that to the numerous "displaced" employees whose jobs were replaced by a robot and 1 "maintainer". American companies are closing and/or offshoring their factories/service positions (lower product costs=bigger profit). Our technological skills (and basic educational levels) are falling far behind. Federal assistance is stretched beyond it's means, and the families paying the taxes are unable to afford basic health/dental care themselves (now VERY MUCH "profit" based businesses/ corporations-hypocritical oath?)

Unemployment is high, people aren't spending money and losing their homes. The candidates promote more government assistance, but NONE are saying they'll bring jobs home or encourage companies to stay here. Where does the money for assistance come from? Taxes. Close the door, increase employment.

It's economists with PhDs who control all decisions related to jobs, outsourcing, trade agreements, tarriffs, etc.

Congress and the president are paralyzed from action unless they confer with the Fed Chairmen, his leutenants, and various other professional economists. Look at the recent economic stimulus package. Both houses of Congress and the President were begging the Fed Chairman to safe us from a recession. 535 elected representatives and the Prez weren't smart enough to figure out what was best for the economy. They had to beg the pinhead to help us through our misery. It's a f-ing disgrace.

Yeah I'm here in Oki right now and it sux. The reason why we are on lock down is because When the Marine was accused of allegedly raping the 14 yr old girl, the general warned every military personal to stay out of trouble for the following week, and what did some of these guys do, One was arrested for DUI after he snuck out of his barracks, and one drunk marine was arrested for sleeping in a Japanese family's house off base. My dad (Marine, E-9) said another marine was arrested for pissing over the side walk and mooning school kids. Its not the marines its just these individuals who decide to do stupid s***t.

Reply:We were stationed in Northern Japan for 7 years, with friends in Okinawa, and this isn't that unusual. Unfortunately, the Marines there have a reputation (and at times, a well deserved one) of causing problems. It has gotten to the point the entire area is very anti-military, so even when minor issues occur with off base civilians, extreme measures end of being taken. If something more serious happens..such as a rape, serious fight, property damages or other crimes...it is not unusual for curfews and lock downs to occur while the investigation goes on or until things calm down. We had Marines pass through our base in Misawa several times and they were always under curfews and strict rules about leaving the base while there.

To the poster in Misawa: This is the first lock down I've ever experienced. This is not common here. I've been here five years, and I hear that this has happened only once before where all branches were punished, this was back in the early 90s. So it's not common. It's very cruel. Why should the innocent suffer? Why not ban the red light districts where most of this stuff happens anyway?

Also, my friend had an older Okinawa break into her home and sleep on her couch. She called the local police and they told her that it's not a big deal because he was too drunk to find his way home. He got off with a warning. I am not justifying the crime of the young Cpl. who did the same, I just think people need to realize that crimes happen in all communities and all cultures. Americans are not the only crimminal producers, just because our crimes are reported.

My children and I were looking forward to our whale watching tour Sunday, but we weren't allowed to go so we had to cancel. My kids were SO disappointed and they don't understand why we are all being punished like this for others actions. I have been here almost four years and have seen curfews when I lived off base, but never anything like this. We can't even take a base sponsored tour. Tell me why this should include the dependants of military members? We didn't ask to come here and try very hard to comply with Japanese policies, laws, and etiquette. Well, now we have 4 months left on our tour to get out of this place and I'm counting down. This weekend 18 service members were independantly arrested off base for allegedly breaking the lockdown rules. It's said they are in jail facing court marshals. A family that went out to dinner has been given 48 hours to leave while the husband stays in jail. They are saying that if this keeps up, the March 3rd (rumored)deadline date could extend up to four months! What?! If this happens the Okinawan islanders will be happy to know that they will have one less military family to purchase their goods and support their economy. I will be out of here ASAP with my children. My military spouse agrees. I am not about to spend the last 4 months here on this island in lockdown! I was hoping to leave this island on a good note with good memories, seeing the sights of the island we have yet to see or would like to see again.They don't want us here, well guess what? Some of us don't want to be here either! Here's hoping that it DOES end March 3 or "Sainara"!

Reply:Most of us do not have free dental service. Where there is an NHS dentist in your area, the treatment is only free for pregnant women and children I think. Otherwise charges are quite high with often no free access to orthodontists.

what do you guys think about all these trade and tech schools...ITT, everest college, american career college, etc. they teach you how to do or be a mesage therapist, business admin, dental asst, and parol officer. are these schools worth the time and money?once you graduate how much money do these people really make?

What about all these trade technical schools?
There is very little you can do with these degrees from many tech schools. They offer degrees in criminal justice- but to be a cop you need a degree from an accredited school. In NY the police department does not accept this, and the city college offers a cheaper and better program.

They offer a degree in business- but I bet your local community college does, too, and employers will look more fondly on that.

Before you do this, check out what your local community college offers. What are you interested in, and what are you good at? See if the community college offers something you would like.

I was speaking to an Egyptian dental student who said to me, and I am not Jewish or Muslim, not even close, that said everyone knew the Jews ruled the government, banks and media in the USA.

I want to tell people there are more muslims now than Jews and many muslims are doing quite well as immigrants in the US. Financially better off than some other new immigrants.

I grew up with a friend who adored 'the living legend' H-D. Infact, he would argue with adults who hated Harley's and would get firey pissed at those who called them 'Pigs'. This even included police officers who rode Kawaski's. My bud was schooled on everything from 1903 right to Evo's. He had friends that were 1%er's or 'Outlaw Bikers'.

So, I know my friend was true to the colors of H-D, but today you have a bunch of weinies who just are spoiled that work at factories or dental offices or law offices buying the bikes and leathering up, plus back when my bud and I were kids he argued that people should buy American Made... And then yesterday I stopped by our local Harley Dealership and all the salesman,mechanics and the actual owner drove FOREIGN TRUCKS! Toyota x 3,Nissan x 2, A Lexus Car... so this 'Buy American' is all BS in my opinion.

I thought about a Softail, but i would be no better than the rest of the idiots out there now. It's like RAIDER NATION %26amp; a dumb fad anymore!

Reply:Four years ago, at age 28, I managed to buy a '77 FLH off a friend who needed quick cash. My first Harley. This thing had fat front forks and huge fat bob tanks, 18" apehanger handlebars, hard saddlebags and loud straight pipes coming outta a 74 inch shovelhead. Plus it was painted General Lee orange. It was the metal and road dirt embodiement of what Harley stands for (in my naive perception at the time). I couldn't believe I was able to get the thing and was obviously proud as hell of it. This wasn't a fresh off the showroom floor chrome monster, it was old-skool cool. So, the first weekend I had it I tooled on up to the local H-D dealer, really looking forward to finally being able to park in the bikes only area of the lot, with the rest of the badasses on Harleys. Wrong. Of the twenty of so bikes there, not a one of them was over three years old, huge chrome barges with white collar wannabes in their new leather actually standing beside their bikes talking on their cell phones to other wannabes they were waiting on. Not a one of them even noticed that I didn't have a twin-cam engine under my tank, they probably couldn't have named it even if they had noticed it was different. They were all looking at me like my old scoot was gonna rape their new girlie bikes. I stopped being proud for a moment, hung my head a bit, kick started my bike, and roared outta there. So, yes, everyone is a candy a$$. Happy now?
Reply:I hear ya. H-D has pretty much sold out. However isn't that what we go into buisness to do, make gobs of money? I ride a 2000 Buell Cyclone, and am a biker. I've riden a few different bikes. the people you mentioned are not bikers, They're just pretending, but hey don't we all at times? You can spot them a mile away. However the police are a little nicer these days. Just think, when the fad dies down we'll have lot's of cheap scoots, always look on the bright side

Reply:I have worked for some of those guys that pay for someone to trailer their Harleys just outside of Surgis and then get them out and ride. THere have always been those guys, but they didn't tell anyone they had money. Of course back then they might have been held up and robbed by some of the other bikers too. LOL

It used to be that you had to order your Harley and wait for it. The new guys buy Harleys to make themselves feel bigger than everyone else not because of the romance of owning a Harley.

My husband and I bought our first Harley last summer when we retired. We have always ridden Hondas but wanted something we could ride in comfort for a long time. We got the Electra Glide. Oh man it sounds so awesome. And we can ride alot longer without stopping to stretch our legs. We still ride the hondas around the city because they handle better at slower speeds.

I say buy your Harley. It will be like part of the family!

i need all my basic classes...

for dental hygiene the classes i need are full, but what are some classes i could take that could help me in the future in case i change my major- like safety classes??

hygene classes are hard to get in. Here in AZ they are accepting enrollment for 2011 school year. It is the same thing with the nursing shortage. They need to fill the jobs and stop having shortages.

If you are taking any safety classes, be sure to choose something you are interested in since it doesn't apply to your major. Look up who is teaching the class you are interested in on http://www.ratemyprofessors.com so you can get an idea of how good the class is.

The courses you mentioned above are all excellent, but they can be made horrible by a bad professor.

It is shameful that prisoners in the American justice system can get a college education, have the best of health and dental care and we have children with no healthcare and limited educational opportunities. Prisons are getting more and more like holiday camps,which is why a lot of prisoners re-offend.I wouldnt give prisoners many rights and i wouldnt give murderers any at all.Every one has rights but these people dont think of ours when committing the crime.Id make prison life as hard as possible then they might think twice before re-offending.

No, it's not a scam. Hoever the key thing to it is what they "do" offer. They didn't tell you what it takes to get there to where they'd "offer" this to you. You have to reach a curtain level and that is very hard work to do. It's not going to be right away, and saling this, if you get involved, is simple to do BUT difficult. Have you looked at the entire compensation plan? If your satisfied with it, then go for it. It's going to be harder then you think. I wasn't impressed with the entire plan, so I went with a different company where I get paid every single month people pay their phone bills, Internet, Satallite TV and cellular phone bills from Verizon, AT%26amp;T, Sprint, T-mobile, Altell and Nextell etc. I felt they had a product and service easier to sale and have monthly income coming in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to "not" do it. Just it's going to be difficult to sale because theirs so many companies like this.

Lock jaw is *ONLY* a diffenciancy in HUMANS. Its a dental problem.They were bred to hunt RODENTS. That is why they are in the Terrier group with jack russels, and schnauzers. Not in the Working Group with Dobermans, Mastifs, and Rottweilers.

- That every female "needs" to have one litter before spaying

A dog trained by its owner is never properly trained. A dog who is trained to mind off leash is going to get killed. Dogs should never be expected to do any type of work and it is cruelty to teach them to work. Crates are abuse. Dogs should have their own room in the house. A dog who obey every command given to him has an abusive owner. Oh there are so many.

I live in the US and I'm studying dental hygiene which is a job I can do almost anywhere. I think it would be cool to work in another country. I met someone who said England would be a good place to go because theres a shortage of hygienists plus the pay is higher than in the US. Australia is another place I think would be cool to go. My accent would give away I'm from the US though and it would be a bad idea to go live there if they dislike Americans. My question to anyone from England or Australia is what do they think of Americans? Would you not like it an American was working in your denists office?

I have a sister living in Germany, but of turkish citizenship. She is an educated and certifed dental highgenist who has been doing this for close to 20 years. I am an american citizen for over 6 years now. We are thinking of her moving here to the US. What does it take for her to live here, as well as use her proffesion to practice her dental highgenist? Does she have to go back to school? What typ of visa or work permit? Does she have to have an employer first?

I worked in a dental office as dental assistant before I entered Dental school. I had few accidents with women who were lesbians. First time one of my patients(Caucasian) told my doctor that she doesn't feel comfortable with male assistant and she didn't want me to stay next to her, Second time one of our patients(African-American) told me that she doesn't like men and doesn't understand them because they are crazy..I asked her, why did she think that way. She answered me that I am weird beacuse I asked her that question.

The dentist who I worked with is gay, too. He was surprised about these women.

Both of these women are lesbians. They told my co-worker who is woman.

Afterwards, I changed my opinion about gay people( to not posistive). I started to think that maybe the problem is not onlly with straight people, but gays too. Isn't that hate and discrimination?

I'm a lesbian and I don't hate men, but I do hate the men who treat women wrong. Now maybe they hate men because of their past like if they was raped or stalker somethings on that line. There is always a reason for a lesbian to dislike people to a certain existent. Now think if you had a friend who was straight and they was raped they wouldn't feel the same again with a man they would have a lot of trouble trusting sometimes she might even say she hated them for what they did. But, have you considered your own interactions, how you treated them, how you came to find out their sexual orientation. You might have come off a little strongly, or made them uncomfortable. Consider whether or not this happened with anyone else, gay, straight, male, or female. Don't think about it too much, if you haven't let go of it at this point, then you're probably overestimating their suspicions of you.

I am a 42 yr. old straight woman and I have several gay friends and they are very sweet, I do work with a gay woman and at first she wasn't very nice to me then she changed and started talking to me about her life and now I consider her as a friend. I don't think that you were weird for asking the question she probably should have tried to explain to you why the second patient said that and no lesbians are not crazy and no the problem is not with gays or straight people. This is as true of the gay community as any other.

Yes, there are some lesbians who hate men. I have a number of lesbian friends, and the topic of "Man haters" has come up now and then. Based on my conversations with these women, I'd say that lesbians who actively hate men are a small minority within the lesbian community. The most common response I've seen lesbians give on this topic is:

"Oh, I don't hate men. I just REALLY LOOOOVE women!" generally followed by an action expressing affection or lust towards their partner.

Don't judge an entire group by the actions or opinions of a few bad apples. You'll end up hating everyone.
Reply:I cannot answer for those who feel uncomfortable near adult males. Perhaps, though, they may have had an unfortunate experience with a man; this need not be confined to lesbians but can apply to all womanhood.

I do not hate all men. I respect and admire those in my family. Those I did hate were in my late partner's family for what they did to her. This hatred became self destructive and it was only after I learned to forgive them and myself that I began to recover.

This does not mean that I like the misinformed religious bigots.

The struggle to form a unity government in Iraq continues, but signs of hope are emerging. One of the sticking points continues to be Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari, who has so far refused to resign; however, on Sunday the Iraqi Shia Alliance reported it was close to a deal to replace him.

For a little perspective, travel back to the States, to the U.S. Senate and watch the immigration debate in the Senate. We've been doing democracy for several centuries now, and we can't get 100 politicians to agree on one issue. Considering we're the pros, we could cut the Iraqis a little slack as they continue to get the feel of this democracy-project thing.

There continues to be plenty of good news to be found in Iraq. The Iraqi army continues to take over responsibility for more battle space, al Qaeda continues to take a beating, and rebuilding of the country is progressing. Moreover, the Iraqi economy is improving, and has doubled in the last three years.

News for Pessimistic Generals

The media has given an enormous amount of publicity to former generals who are calling for Rumsfeld to resign, and all but ignore those who remain optimistic about our efforts in Iraq. Colonel William Grimsley commanded the brigade that first took control of Baghdad Airport. Three years on he remains optimistic about the country's future:

Grimsley, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Combat Brigade Team during the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom, said history — not current events — will tell the true story of Iraq's metamorphosis.

And that story will show how Iraq ultimately emerged from almost 40 years of a regime that ignored the people's needs and undermined its potential, Grimsley, now a military assistant to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, said during an interview with American Forces Press Service and the Pentagon Channel.

Major Kevin Carter just returned from Iraq, and shares this assessment:

Charter believes not enough attention is being paid to the progress being made by Iraqis in taking control of their country. He said the people of Iraq are grateful Saddam Hussein has been overthrown.

"I was told by an Iraqi that only two things could get rid of Saddam, the United States or Allah. I will never forget that," Charter said. "An Iraqi officer told me that if we just up and left the country would implode. They are so grateful for us being there and toppling Saddam. Even the Sunnis, who benefited under Saddam, thanked us."

Before you think I'm just parroting the Pentagon line by quoting only officers, a Marine serving with an Iraqi unit had this to say:

"Everybody hears about all the car bombs in Baghdad and how many people got shot. Those things are reality — I don't want to downplay them. But there's a lot of good things happening," he said.

Despite being the main targets of terrorists and ex-Baathists, Iraqi soldiers remain well motivated:

According to the commanding officer of the local Iraqi-army unit here, the soldiers' motivation to fight insurgents is steady despite the loss of two of their own comrades. During a memorial service for a fallen soldier, the Iraqi commander of 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division, assured his soldiers they were performing well and encouraged them to continue to listen and learn from the Marines.

"I want the soldiers to continue to do the job they are doing," said the commanding officer, who wishes to remain anonymous. "We need the Marines' support and they are very professional when it comes to training my soldiers."

A tip led U.S. troops to a house where forged documents were made:

The two suspected forgers were found at a house where Soldiers seized $2,050 in U.S. currency, more than 500,000 Iraqi Dinars, 125 various forms of identification, fake stamps for the IDs and an AK-47.

Another tip led U.S. troops to a weapons cache at a terrorist training facility:

Found at the site were 19 155 mm artillery rounds and 21 mortar rounds of various calibers.

The site may have been a training site of insurgents. The cache was transported to a secured location for controlled detonation.

320 Iraqis from Anbar Province arrived in Jordan to received training as police officers.

The Iraqi army continues to take over more battle space:

The 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division is assuming control of an area of responsibility that encompasses Balad, Al Duluyah and Yethrib, as well as the smaller villages surrounding these cities.

In addition to taking over battle space, Iraqis continue to take the lead in more security operations. Operation Cobra Strike was lead by soldiers of the 8th Iraqi Army Division. The operation was planned, and conducted by Iraqis, with U.S. soldiers in support.

Iraqi soldiers discovered four weapons caches during an operation in southern Baghdad:

In total, the four weapons caches consisted of seven RPG rounds, three machine guns, 28 70 mm mortar rounds, 38 60mm mortar rounds, landmines, a large bag of homemade explosives, a sniper rifle, grenades, 13 pre-made roadside-bombs, ten rockets, 403 linked rounds of small arms ammunition, three bags of linked ammunition and 5,000 rounds of sniper-rifle rounds.

139 Iraqi soldiers recently graduated from commando school, and are ready to fight:

"The Iraqi people are tired of the terrorists, extremists and instability and this unit fights that ... I am very proud that I am part of this special unit that will help stabilize this country," he said. "The terrorists have had their time. This is our time now."

39 of 45 planned border forts along the Iran-Iraq border are complete. The border posts are manned by Iraqis.

U.S. troops discovered several significant weapons caches on an island in the Euphrates River:

On April 5, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, discovered 34 fused 82 mm rounds, five fused 120 mm rounds, 600 82 mm mortar rounds, 23 fused rocket-propelled grenades, five hand grenades, 28 55-gallon drums of TNT, nine 55-gallon sacks of nitrate, two bundles of detonation chord, a penetrator and 5,000 AK-47 rounds.

The next day, Soldiers gathered 1,500 meters of command wire, a mortar sight, a receiver, 54 82mm rounds and a 107mm rocket.

On April 7, MND-B Soldiers discovered the following items on the island: 1,450 18 mm anti-aircraft rounds, 27 125 mm aerial bombs, 30 anti-tank grenades, seven 60 mm mortars, five 82 mm mortars, 25 RPG rounds, 96 sticks of dynamite, 600 mortar primers, 156 hand grenades, three cylindrical containers, a RPG launcher, a rocket (caliber unknown), 37 boosters and a small mortar.

In Mosul, U.S. soldiers discovered a significant amount of materials used to make IEDs.

In Tikrit, a terrorist planting an IED was captured.

In Yusifiyah, several terrorist were killed or captured after their safe house was attacked:

During the assault, five terrorists, three of them wearing suicide vests, were killed; five others, one of whom was wounded, were detained. Two of the suicide bombers were killed before either could detonate his vest, and the third detonated his body bomb killing only himself and injuring no one else.

I mentioned Operation Cowpens last week. The operation ended Friday, and the tally of captured munitions is impressive

US forces killed five suspected insurgents and detained five others in a raid on a house southwest of Baghdad early Sunday in a hunt for an alleged Al Qaeda operative, the US military reported, according to AFP.

In another raid, a senior al Qaeda operative was killed. Abu Umar was the terror groups "ambassador," and was charged with forming relationships with other groups in Iraq. Umar was an associate of Osama bin Laden. More than 115 top al Qaeda operatives have been killed or captured in Iraq over the last few months.

Al Qaeda in Iraq continues to use unwilling people to carry out attacks. One attacker was identified by the fingerprints found on his hand, which was hand cuffed to the steering wheel of a car used as a bomb. It was the only part of him found.

U.S. military vehicles in Iraq will be getting a new anti-RPG system called Trophy from the Israelis [This item has been corrected since posting. — Ed.]:

The Trophy, unveiled by the IDF a year ago, combines two main systems: a radar built by Israel Aircraft Industries Ltd., detects threats; and a Rafael-designed system destroys incoming threats in flight. Rafael claims that the Trophy can protect armored fighting vehicles against all types of anti-tank rockets and missiles.

The two conceptual innovations incorporated into the Trophy are 360-degree protection of the tank or APC, which eliminates the need for adding armor plating, which can double a tank’s weight, restricting its mobility and maneuverability; and to provide protection from new threats from the side and top in low-intensity combat, compared with frontal threats of the past.

The State Department issued a report on Iraq's economy. Iraq's economy as nearly doubled in the last three years. GDP rose by 2.6% last year, and is expected to rise by more than ten percent in 2006.

A carpentry workshop funded by USAID is helping Iraqis earn a living:

The workshop focuses on fostering leadership, independence and financial stability among 18- to 24-year-olds. Profits from sale of furniture and doors made in the carpentry shop are reinvested in the youth center to purchase sports equipment, Internet access and secondary school supplies.

Three new power substations are now online in Najaf. At a cost of $4.8 million per substation, each should provide 25,000 households with electricity.

A ceremony in Baghdad marked the opening of a renovated youth center:

The Youth Center offers programs and training in weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, judo and soccer. During the tour, the guests viewed young Iraqi boxers sparring; wrestlers practicing takedowns; soccer players kicking goals; and weightlifters pumping iron.

The project was financed with funds from the 10th Mountain Division.

Everyday Americans are also helping out in Iraq. Frank Casa of Fairport, New York raised $25,000 to send wheel chairs to disabled residents of Hilla:

Casa has raised more than $25,000 to send desperately needed wheelchairs to Hilla, a city south of Baghdad, ravaged by the blasts of suicide attacks and car bombs. Later this year, he'll travel to Iraq to help distribute the wheelchairs.

"There are many, many civilians that are caught in desperate straits, that were caught up in this war, and they're strictly victims," Casa said. "Not to have mobility is like throwing fuel on the fire."

* A water system is under construction in Fallujah. When completed it will provide 200,000 residents with clean water.

* A firing range is under construction at the police academy in Hillah.

* Renovations are complete on the police station in Kadhimiya.

* In Baghdad, construction is complete on three solid waste transfer stations.

* A project to provide 10,000 residents in Basrah is complete.

* Construction of two power stations in Erbil Province is complete.

* Reconstruction is complete on two fire stations in Karbala.

* 13 of 15 school projects are complete in Karbala.

* Construction of new classrooms is now complete in Mosul.

U.S. and Iraqi troops conducted a dental clinic in Amu Shabi:

A smile can light up one's face... and today, more than 200 Iraqis had a reason to smile.

Iraqi-army troops, along with U.S. Special Forces medics, Civil Affairs and 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division Soldiers, traveled to a school in Amu Shabi, Iraq, to provide a Dental Assessment and Care Clinic for local citizens.

A Scottish company has plans to build the first water park in Iraq. This story is pertinent because of the what the company's sales managers said:

International sales manager Jim Stuart said yesterday: "I am delighted to be involved in this project and it shows that rebuilding in Iraq really is happening."

Sadly, the newly elected Miss Iraq won't be attending the opening.

Norway's DNO will become the first Western company since the invasion to produce oil in Iraq next year. The company has discovered five oil reservoirs in northern Iraq.

Iraqi Air is purchasing two new planes from Airbus.

Iraq is spending $25 million to purchase two new oil tankers.

OUR HEROES

Petty Officer 2nd Class Juan M. Rubio will be awarded the Silver Star later this month for actions in Iraq:

On Jan. 1, 2005, Rubio's platoon was ambushed on the Euphrates River. The Marines left their boats and pursued the attackers, only to have an explosive set off nearby.

Rubio and three Marines were wounded. Despite having shrapnel wounds in his legs and arms, Rubio belly-crawled to the injured Marines and treated their injuries. He then dragged each of them across open terrain, under fire, to safety behind a wall.

He showed the uninjured Marines how to care for the wounded troops and then began directing covering fire while he helped take the wounded back to the boats.

"Your actions saved lives and you have set an example for future corpsmen and Marines to emulate," wrote Maj. Gen. R.F. Natonski, who wrote a letter endorsing the medal. "Your service is coveted by each and every Marine in the 1st Marine Division."

One Marine died that day, Lance Cpl. Brian Parrello. Rubio believes Parrello saved his life.

"He took a big chunk of artillery," Rubio said. "He absorbed 90 percent of the explosion for me. I owe my life to him."

Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Jewett was awarded the Bronze Star for action in Iraq:

Jewett ran through a hail of gunfire and dragged the injured teammate 20 feet to the protection of a large vehicle, the citation says. He then administered first aid.

Under continuous attack, he supervised the evacuation of his wounded teammate. The Navy said Jewett's "courageous actions" saved his teammate's life.

Lance Corporal Carlos Gomez-Perez was awarded the Silver Star this week for his actions in Fallujah:

In the late morning, the platoon came under fire from machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades coming from three directions, according to a citation signed by Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter.

Gomez-Perez first made sure that several injured comrades received medical attention, then moved another downed Marine out of the line of fire, suffering wounds to his shoulder and face in the process.

"Despite his injuries, he again exposed himself to enemy fire and continued to attack the enemy with grenades and by firing his rifle with his uninjured arm," the citation states. "By his bold leadership, wise judgment and complete dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Gomez-Perez reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."

Will the liberal media report this success in Iraq?

Should I be worried?

I have been in an interracial relationship for the past year and I must admit that we are really happy. We don't get any backlash for being together except the occasional remarks from her father( he is a bigot but will never say it to my face). I am African-American and yes she is a Caucasian female. We completely bash the stereotypes of the interracial relationships. I am financially wealthy, well fit, and intelligent. She is in extremely good shape, intelligent and very beautiful. In a year we will both be attending the University of Texas. I will be obtaining my bachelors in Business Management and she will be getting hers in Dental Hygienist. The only problem with this relationship is that she only dates African-Americans, while I have no restrictions(we all bleed red).Sometimes I feel like she only loves me because of my skin. If I was white or of Latino origin, no way. I on the other hand would not care. Should I say something, leave it be, or just leave her? Please help!!

The world at large?/ global problems?

You constantly hear about the problems around the world, famine, plague, aids, war, orphans, diease, corruption, refugees, and the list goes on. My questions is where does it stop? People look at the US and say we have the most and should give the most. We have problems here in our own country, aids, homeless, orphans, people devistated by natural disasters and many other things. An old saying used to be charity begins at home. I believe that once we solve our problems here then help. It may sound cold but in reality the US cannot solve all the problems, and fankly why should we. The US already pays out billions around the world and what do we get in return? I for one do not believe that our taxes are being spent right. As an example maybe america should look at immigrants here they receive low interest business loans, medical, dental, assistance in housing, education and many other benefits that your average american does not get. Let's focus on fixing what is wrong HERE

I agree. Besides most of the money we send overseas goes to the corrupt government leaders anyway. The needy seem to never get any or enough to help.

Our government knows this but continue to buy friends that turn to enemies anyway when they sponge all they can.

I think we need to foreclose on France, Germany, all the countries we gave LOANS to after WWII. None has ever been repaid in full.

Now I hear breakthroughs are being made with patients with

for these patients, and more health breakthroughs are on the way.

On every front, if your talking progress, America has been in the ring swinging, and making them count.

We have many important people to thank for helping the rest of us live in a great life style, something that many other foreign

countries are so very much jealous of us, because of our high life styles.

Why is it, that so many foreign nationals want to come in and

live on US soil? They want the "good life" too, and our

government sets up educational, business, home low interest

loans to help the low wage earner "make it" until they get on their

feet, financially.

If you look at US history, we have had to fight every negative issue that has forced confrontation on us, and yet we still come

out on top, because you cannot stomp out a dream, or an ideal.

It will prevail, sooner or later.

Since the American Revolutionary War clear up to the 21st century, 231 years of charter, Americans have come together to

help fight and correct any wrong that should be righted,

paid the ultimate sacrifice, and led the way so following generations would have it easier, and lead a more enjoyable

life style, and their children to follow as well.

Americans are the most generous people on earth, they have constantly donated their time and money to help champion

causes some have considered to be lost or beyond hope.

They have served all over the globe in third world countries,

teaching their indigenous about how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables in arable soil, how to secure and sanitize their water

supplies, set up human waste disposal stations for real poverty-

stricken people, how to clean up their communities, to elimimate

all street garbage, get their rivers and streams back in clear

clean running order, and the volunteer men and women have

been teaching them basic education, learning about the

socialization of mankind, how to get along with each other,

mathematics, sciences hard and soft, English where applicable

and comparative religions, and other electives, if there is time.

Teaching the young men the building trades, and the women

textiles and fabrics, how to sew, make a dress, etc.

In short they teach them how to become self-reliant, self-sustaining, and then they can follow their dream, just like in the USofA.

Education is the key, always is, in my opinion.

Of course, the USA will have social problems, can't be totally

eliminated, but we can try to understand why and deal with that more effectively.

We are a nation of laws, and number close to 300 million people from different countries and all walks of life.

So there will always be a certain amount of social ailments, that

will never dry up and blow away.

Paying taxes? According to the OMB (Office of Management and

Budget) serves the US President, the war in Iraq has cost the average taxpayer collectively over 8 hundred billion $$$$ for

munitions and gun support, and over 3,000 KIAed of our

US military personnel(killed in action) and the President has asked the Congress for a plus up of five brigades of combat

soldiers (about 21,500)

What is the objective, Mr. President? What is your exit strategy, Mr. President?

He don't really know, and he listens to no one, we are stuck with

a one way communicator.

Yes, charity begins at home, but may only be a metaphor rather

than a straight statement.

I just watched Michael Moore's sicko video and am wondering do you get free dental over there too?

Right about now it sucks to be an american I have 2 young children and cannot afford insurance and am not eligible for state coverage of any kind.

That movie seriously makes me want to live in another country what did you think when you saw it?
