Technically, the CODA is separate from the American Dental Association and is recognized by the US Office of Education to perform educational accrediting functions. The Commission is made up of a variety of persons appointed by different groups. Thus, it's not solely a part of the Am. Dental Assn. The ADA appoints some commissioners, but so does the Am Dental Education Assn and several other groups that have an interest in dental education. So, decisions by this commission are binding, regardless of the Am Dental Assn's views on the matter.
