What is the worst Dog myth you have every heard?

Mine would have to be Dobermans' brains swell up and explode when they get older.

The other is when a doberman runs its fastest their brains explode and they die.

The worst, that ALWAYS get me angry, is that "Pit bulls"

(American Staffordshire Terriers/ Bull Terriers)

Were bred to fight in pits, and have Lock jaw...

Lock jaw is *ONLY* a diffenciancy in HUMANS. Its a dental problem. They were bred to hunt RODENTS. That is why they are in the Terrier group with jack russels, and schnauzers. Not in the Working Group with Dobermans, Mastifs, and Rottweilers.

"The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of "locking mechanism" unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."

Its just bothers me that there are such ignorant people!

What is the worst Dog myth you have every heard?
Let's see...

- Eating raw meat will make them violent and bloodthirsty

- They are omnivores and need veggies/grains in their diet

- That over-bathing is responsible for dry skin (why don't show dogs have dandruff? They get bathed several times in one show! Dry skin = poor diet or health issues.)

- That any breed can "snap" and go crazy/turn on it's owner

- That every female "needs" to have one litter before spaying

I'll work on some more. :-P
Reply:I would say what I just read!
Reply:The "dry nose = sick dog" one makes me laugh, because up until I told them otherwise, my parents believed it. They probably spent a ton of money rushing our dogs to the vet's when I was growing up, just because the nose wasn't cold and wet for a whole minute. LOL... better to be safe than sorry, of course. But funny, nonetheless.
Reply:Hmmm .. worst dog myth ...

***Agrees with the dry nose myth ... same thing with cats .. the sad part is people yell at others who ask "My animal has a dry nose, what do I do?" and the people answer "GET YOU TO A VET NOW BEFORE HE DIES YOU INSENSITIVE LOSER" .. lol

A lot of people need to educate themselves before the worry people like that.

**Back to the myths**

I dunno .. but the whole cat and nine lives thing sure ain't true =(
Reply:Pitbulls were BRED to fight to amuse fvcked up humans.

Therefore their NAME!!!!

Late Entry : the worst myth? as per Golden.

The raw meat will "turn" them.
Reply:That if you feed a dog a raw diet it will make them agressive and blood thisty!
Reply:There are a lot of myth about Pit bulls, Dobermans , Rottweilers. There are a lot of silly people who belive in this myths.
Reply:All of the above are on my list. Stupid stories. Golden retrievers are "high strung." This one gets me - high strung comes from people who don't train their dog and throw it in a back yard and don't exercise or socialize it. Any breed would be "high strung."

Goldendoodles and labradoodles are hypoallergenic and don't shed.

For another species - cats smother babies thing gets me going.
Reply:That breeding ONE litter will not affect the overpopulation!

And that teacup Chorkiuggleorgipugglepoos exist.
Reply:That Golden Retrievers are vicious.
Reply:My personal favorite is "Once a dog has tasted blood, it will always bite and/or be a killer" What a doozie. I'm with ya on the pitbull thing, but people are ignorant and will believe anything, especially when perpetuated by the media.
Reply:Obviously the 'bad breed' myths. The idea that a larger dog is more prone to aggressiveness than a small dog. Small dogs are useless ( I love that one even though I prefer big dogs) Dogs cause more damage than cats. Certain dogs are 'harmless' or completely unable to do any harm based on breed and size. A dog trained by its owner is never properly trained. A dog who is trained to mind off leash is going to get killed. Dogs should never be expected to do any type of work and it is cruelty to teach them to work. Crates are abuse. Dogs should have their own room in the house. A dog who obey every command given to him has an abusive owner. Oh there are so many.
Reply:Motor oil cures mange.

I'm sorry, USED motor oil cures mange.

Add: And beagles are stupid. They're not stupid, just stubborn, and smart enough to see what they want. In fact, they seem smarter than the average dog. While a Lab may act all soppy over their owners for love, a beagle will sit down, look up expectantly, and demand food.
Reply:I hate it when people place stereotypes on breeds (all Pit Bulls are ruthless attack dogs, all Beagles howl all the time, all Labs are stupid, etc.).

And just to correct you, lockjaw is a symptom of tetanus, which animals can indeed have.
Reply:If you get a dog, it will automatically love everybody in the household. I spent the first decade of my life with a dog that hated me and tried to bite when I got too close. She was sweet as taffy to everyone else but not me. It wasn't because it teased her because for the most part, I learned early on to stay away from this animal.
Reply:that white-colored dogs are smarter/better other ones
Reply:I don't know if it is a myth or not but it could become one. I have a friend who watches Ceasar Milan and and has an unruly dog. He said he knows what to do now, he has to do the "SHh"noise when his dog is naughty and his dog will become trained. Oh my God TV is so wrong.

I was rolling around on the floor with laughter.
Reply:That ANY dog classified as "teacup" is a genuinely recognized breed instead of some fvcked up term given to runt dogs by BYBs and puppy mills to sell really small pups.

That pet stores don't sell puppy mill puppies. They all do. I don't mean the rescue center that Petsmart or Petco has...I mean pet shops.

And the generalization of breeds, like others said...all Labs are slow and stupid, all Beagles howl like crazy, Pit Bulls/German Shepherds/Chow Chows/Dobermans/Rottweilers are all really aggressive dogs.
Reply:Dogs have no memories

I had to go overseas for 3 weeks to nurse my Mum after surgery. Well if dogs have no memories I'd like to have seen the reaction when I got home if my two had actually remembered me!!!!
Reply:I'd have to say the raw meat/blood one. . . everyone who routinely feeds their dog(s) raw meat because they've chosen to take more control over their pets' diets is doomed, as is anyone who lives nearby!!! And I probably should have been mauled a few years ago, as there was a small bit of blood involved before we learned to play nicely with our puppy teeth. . . .
Reply:%26lt; doberman runs its fastest their brains explode and they die%26gt; LOL mine must have been re-incarnated a few times then!!! lol

There are so many, some are laughable but some just make me mad, like dobermanns will 'turn' on you.

someone said that any 'pedigree' dog can turn on you - oh yeah all those mutts are just perfect and all the purebreds are killing people in the street, eh! Surprised there are any breeders left! lol
Reply:Those are my two as well.

I've been TOLD the exploding/swelling/outgrowing brain thing on several occasions.

people are sooooo stupid.
