Can an American get a summer job in Amsterdam?

Would I need some type of work permit or visa? Also, if I were to rent a flat, what is a safer neighborhood to look in, but not too expensive. AND, finally, do I have to know Dutch because, sadly, I don't. But, I'm a quick learner. (IS that a stupid question? Because I went there in '88 and so many people knew English.)

Oh BTW, I usually work as a dental assistant. But, do they have many dentists in Amsterdam? I am not being sarcastic, really!

Can an American get a summer job in Amsterdam?
With the EU in place, it is very hard for Non-Europeans to get jobs there.

If you are only going for 2 months, you might ask about getting an extended tourist visa and go from there. You might have better luck getting work once you arrive.

Contact their embassy and ask for assistance.
Reply:People always tell me it will be difficult, but a summer job should be able to combine with a tourist visa (3 months). Do not try to learn dutch. A bit is fine but almost everybody speaks English. There are enough dentists ("tandarts" is dentist) although I would not know how you can get in touch. The phonebook? www.telefoongids.nl
Reply:Yes you will need permit but I don't think anybody will take you to work as dental assistant only for the summer time.

As previous post said you don't need to learn Dutch, maybe you can find work in the restaurants or caffes especially in tourist areas.

To rent a flat in Amsterdam is hard and expensive, there is no safer area, everywhere is more less safe.

Btw. you can post your question on http://www.expatica.com/
